Ultimately the biggest contrast between the presidents, and perhaps the aspect most closely watched by the United States’ allies and adversaries, lies in their views on democracy. Trump complimented autocrats and broke with democratic traditions well before the insurrection in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, that congressional investigators argue he organized. Biden has placed promotion of democracy at the ideological center of his foreign policy, and in December he welcomed officials from more than 100 countries to a “summit for democracy.”
