Report Card on the Human Rights of LGBTQI Peoples: Measuring Democracy, Human Rights, and LGBTQI Inclusion

Inclusive democracies value the democratic, economic, and social contributions of all citizens. Indeed, democracy itself cannot thrive unless the human rights of all people are protected, and this must include protections for often marginalized lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) peoples. Advancing rights for the protection of LGBTQI people is also closely correlated to broader democratic dividends, including efforts to address democratic backsliding, fight corruption, and build resilient movements to fight authoritarianism. These themes of the Summit for Democracy are also themes of LGBTQI movements around the world.

Join us for a lively conversation about democracy, LGBTQI inclusion, and scoring systems, what they can and cannot tell us about the current state of both democracy and human rights. The Council for Global Equality and Franklin and Marshall College will debut a new Report Card on the Human Rights of LGBTQI Peoples that was prepared for the Summit for Democracy, with thirty indicators on LGBTQI protections and inclusion scoring all of the countries invited to the Summit. Commentators will also consider broader connections between democracy, human rights, and citizenship for LGBTQI individuals.
