Citizen trust and government trustworthiness discussed during first Year of Action event to inform future research efforts and programming initiatives
More than 350 participants drawn from government, academia, think tanks and NGOs met virtually to explore the role and importance of citizen support and trust as well as government trustworthiness through a series of academic and practitioner perspectives. With collaboration from the US Department of State and UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development and Cabinet offices, regional and global data was shared regarding the state of citizen trust and government trustworthiness. AA/S Peterson from DRL and Paul Williams from the UK FCDO provided opening remarks with Dr Boniface Dulani (Afrobarometer), Dr Roberto Foa (University of Cambridge), Pippa Norris, (Harvard University) and Dr Elizabeth Zechmeister, (Americasbarometer) providing a series of presentations rich with data. Cecilia Munoz from New America and Soni Khanal from Accountability Lab Nepal shared perspectives regarding how programming can improve trust dynamics. The event continued with a short presentation on a UK government led data platform initiative to collate trust related data. Participants went on to share gaps in the current evidence to inform future research and Tom Carothers (Carnegie Endowment) provided summation remarks.
